So I was right when I said my life was more complicated without the microwave. Last night around 6:30 or so I was making Noah & Eli their Kid Cuisine TV dinners. Of course, I had to put them in the oven. Matt was still at work, Noah & Eli were playing with the babies, and I was making bedtime bottles. I was completely in the zone on those bottles when I heard Aidan shriek. I turned to my side and there he was, standing with the oven broiler door open. Whoever designed this kitchen obviously didn’t plan on cooking any gourmet meals. The oven is a tiny Maytag gas oven (a cookie sheet barely fits in it) with a smaller door below it, for what I assume, broiling. For whatever reason, the bottom section turns on whenever you turn the oven on, regardless if you are broiling or not. The bottom door also happens to line up perfectly for a toddler to open up and use it as a tray table. Poor Aidan was screaming and I had no idea what he had done. I swooped him up and started looking him over. It took me a few minutes to figure out it was his little hands. They were red and he was flapping them around. He must have opened it up and laid both hands flat on the hot door. I called Matt and thankfully he was on his way home. Of course Luke & Liam were also screaming at this point because it was bedtime and they still hadn’t gotten their bottles. By the time Matt got home I could already see blisters, so I knew it wasn’t good. Of course Matt & I had to argue about who was going to take him to the hospital. Matt insists that he is ‘better at that’ than I am, whatever that means. So of course I was left here at home to stress about it. Matt took him to the children’s hospital here and he said it was wonderful. They got him right in and took very good care of him. He has 2nd degree burns on both hands and on one wrist. We have to keep them clean & bandaged up with antibiotic cream at all times. My poor baby! They sent him home with a prescription for Tylenol with Codeine. He slept all night and woke up happy. He didn’t need any pain meds all day long today. This is a picture of him at breakfast…
First thing this morning Matt went out to buy a new microwave. Aidan’s fingers are out of the bandages so he is still able to use his hands. My first thought was how on earth is he going to eat??? The babies are all feeding themselves now and refuse to eat baby food, or anything else that I try to give them on a spoon. Finding foods that don’t dirty up the bandages is going to be a new challenge. We made it until lunch time with the original bandages. About half way through I looked at Aidan and noticed he only had one on. I think my heart skipped a couple of beats at that point. The child never made a sound and somehow managed to slip the entire thing off and toss it onto the floor. Noah had to hold his arm for me while I re-wrapped his hand. The blisters are huge today. I just pray that they don’t burst. We have to follow up with the burn center tomorrow. Apparently when babies have burns on their hands you have to be careful as they heal because they can contract. I guess we’ll see what they tell us tomorrow. As the day went on I had to make sure and keep a pacifier in Aidan’s mouth because he likes to chew on his bandages. I re-wrapped the other hand this afternoon and kept adding tape as he pulled on them. When Matt got home from work tonight he helped me change them both again. It’s definitely a 2-man job. For the record, we have tried 2 different child lock things on this oven door and neither of them work. One of them looked as if it might work, but Liam ripped it off within the first 5 minutes. For now we just have to lock them in the playroom whenever the oven is on. Short term solution for a long term problem.
Here’s one last shot of my special boy… 🙂
